DETAILED ITINERARY
Morning – 8am (ideally) Departure from London
Your day begins with a convenient pickup from your hotel in London. Enjoy a comfortable 2hr (approx) drive, including one quick rest stop, to the Stonehenge Visitor centre, where you’ll find facilities including a good cafe and shop.
Explore Stonehenge with your guide
Highlights of your visit include:
The stone circle itself, explored with expert insight into its construction and purpose
Theories surrounding its origins, from ritual use to astronomical alignment
The surrounding prehistoric landscape, including burial mounds and ancient trackways
The visitor centre exhibitions, providing archaeological context and interpretation
Wide, uninterrupted views of the Wiltshire countryside
After a quick snack at the cafe at Stonehenge, at midday you’ll head back to London, getting back to Central London by about 2pm, leaving time for shopping or more sightseeing with your guide.
OR… Time can be included during the day to stop for lunch at a nearby country pub and a look at a couple of lovely English villages, before returning to London in comfort, with a deeper understanding of this remarkable and enduring site and the surrounding area. This would add an extra two hours to the tour, making it 8hrs in all.
Maybe add… A visit to Stonehenge combines beautifully with a visit to Avebury Henge… this is Stonehenge’s big sister; not far away, it is so big it has part of a lovely village, complete with thatched pub (lunch here anyone?) right inside it!
Otherwise, Salisbury, a nearby city with famous Cathedral is close; here you can see a beautifully preserved copy of The Magna Carta, as well as some of this historic market town with it’s beautiful cathedral ‘close’. Either combination would be a 10hr day trip from London.
Q. How long does this tour last? A. Between six and eight hours, depending on what time you’d like to be back in London, and whether you’d like to add lunch in a country pub; or for a ten hour tour, Stonehenge combines well with Avebury or Salisbury. Our recommended early departure means less crowds and more time for more exploring (or shopping!) afterwards.
Q. How do we get there and back? A. Depending on availability and how many of you there are in your party, we may either provide a Blue Badge Driver-Guide who will drive you in his or her car or MPV, or we can provide a private guide and chauffeured Mercedes, or guide and London black taxi. If you have more than six passengers, we can arrange smart Mercedes Sprinter.
Q. How much travelling is there? A. Stonehenge is about two hours drive from Central London, but traffic can affect timings. Do let us know if you have fixed plans for the same evening as your Stonehenge day trip and we’ll plan accordingly.
Q. Is the tour private? A. Yes. This tour is just for you and your friends / family.
Q. What if I am staying somewhere other than London? A. No problem. Just let us know when you contact us with your enquiry and we’ll customize your day accordingly.
Q. Can we go inside the stone circle at Stonehenge.? A. Visiting during normal opening hours means seeing the circle from just outside it. Most people find this plenty close enough, but if you have a particular interest, and the time, can often arrange a visit outside normal opening hours. This either means getting up well before dawn for an early visit, or starting the tour late and getting back to London very late. Either way, this kind of special access is not always available, so if interested, it’s best to give us a LOT of notice if you can please.
Q. Can you arrange a guide who can show us the more mystical side of Stonehenge and Avebury? A. We can. Not all guides know this side of these ancient sites, so it will depend on availability, but we can organise a tour with a great guide who can not only talk about the history and archaeology, but also ley lines (and demonstrate them using dowsing). Also included on the Ancient Mysteries Tour is information and theories including alien intervention, giants, crop circles and more. If you are interested in this kind of tour, we recommend speaking to John, and considering staying outside London for a night or two and exploring other ancient and mystical sites like Glastonbury with its links to the holy grail, King Arthur and the site of the first Christian church. Look out for a blog about the Ancient Mysteries Tour soon.
Q. Are entry tickets included? A. Entry tickets are included. So do let us know how many of you there are, and whether there are any children (with ages) or seniors, so that we can quote accurately.
Q. Can the tour be customised? A. Yes. We can for instance tailor the tour for kids, or for those who like taking photos. Or we can do a deep dive into history / archaeology.
We find a wonderful guide is what people remember most! So do tell us about yourselves and your tastes and interests when you contact us, and we’ll ‘matchmake’ you with your ideal guide.
Q. What kind of transport do you provide? A. That depends on how many of you there are, driver-guide availability and your preference… but we only do small private tours so it will be a luxury car, MPV, or if you have more than six passengers, we can arrange a Mercedes Sprinter for up to 16 people.
Q. What is, and is not, included? A. Included are: Your guide, transport, fuel, parking, entry fees. Not included are: Your refreshments, meals, gratuities.
